St. Luke’s Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine

St. Luke’s Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine

St. Luke’s Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, located in downtown Boise right off the connector, is a state-of-the-art, 230,000-square-foot facility that integrates a wide range of healthcare services under one roof including outpatient services, orthopedic clinics, advanced imaging, indoor/outdoor rehabilitation, a pharmacy, lab services, and a 12-room ambulatory surgery center. The design ensures accessibility in a high traffic part of downtown Boise, with over 700 parking spaces, providing convenience for patients and visitors alike. From the increased use of high-precision robotics to same-day surgery discharge, this new facility is well-equipped to put St. Lukes at the forefront of innovation–and to potentially become a national leader–in the field of orthopedics.

South Beck and Baird played a key role in the success of this project. First announced in 2017, the project faced unique challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic as well as a complete change in location from a site along River Street to its current location on Fairview near the 27th St. intersection. The team at SBB was tasked with creating (and later adapting) a design plan as well as produce completed construction documents that could meet the needs of the new site that was more centrally located and higher trafficked, while also staying within the budgetary constraints exacerbated by the pandemic. Through key value engineering changes, careful collaboration with the project team, and assistance with the construction administration, SBB helped achieve the client’s budgetary goals while maintaining the ambitious vision of the project.

The 42,000 square foot healthcare facility provides a location where patients can receive advanced cancer care close to home. South Beck and Baird had the important task of designing an outdoor healing garden where patients, staff and visitors may gain a sense of solace while exploring the grounds. The plaza offers outdoor meeting space with secluded break-away areas for private discussions. The landscape was also designed to offer scenic views from second story windows for cancer treatment patients using principles of therapeutic design.

The outdoor garden provides an extension of the indoor gathering space. With large sliding doors, the outdoor patio can host up to approximately 100 guests and creates an area to enjoy fundraisers and company events. The event space includes hardscape design, ipe wood benches, guest seating, overhead trellis structures, screen panels and sound walls.

Patient safety, engaging of senses, healing, pedestrian circulation and ADA access were some of the elements which were considered during the landscape design. The project also highlights a state-of-the-art irrigation system with LEED principles, resulting in lower maintenance, less water usage and reduced costs.

South Beck & Baird worked with the design team to develop a landscape plan that accentuates Idaho’s four seasons. The campus consists of more than 100 acres of green space, intended to accommodate all residents of this full-service retirement community. From a shaded gazebo surrounded by fragrant flowers and flowing water to pickleball courts and walking paths, there is space for any activity level.

Landscape design highlights include eye-catching water features, such as a natural rock waterfall entrance, a landscaped scenic lake with walking bridge and a river rock creek bed. The design also included extensive, thoughtful landscaping between the community and the freeway.

South Beck & Baird worked with the NexCore Group to determine the best placement of a 67,000 square foot medical clinic. South Beck & Baird designed natural retaining walls to accommodate steep terrain and accentuate the building. The design created a highly visible presence next to a busy interstate intersection.

The SBB team created a landscape design and irrigation design, which was integrated into the existing campus design features. The use of many red floral notes helped to enhance the branding of the hospital.

The design of the $238 million, 700,000-square-foot Medical Center was a collaboration of multiple consultants, with South Beck & Baird as the lead for the site analysis, schematic design and construction administration. A highlight of the environmentally-friendly facility included the green roofs designed by the SBB team. The green roofs were developed to reduce energy use interiorly, provide rain water filtration, mitigate the heat island effect, reduce long term ultraviolet impact on the roof and provide aesthetically pleasing views.

The rose garden was also a major component to the overall success of the design. To preserve the roses that had been planted in honor of community members, the bushes were transplanted from the existing hospital located five miles away. SBB led the design of the rose garden which included components ranging from wrought iron fencing to fountains to drainage.

The outdoor dining patio, designed by SBB, has become the hub of the medical campus. Natural basalt boulders were salvaged from the initial foundation construction and integrated throughout the area. The outdoor area also includes furnishings, seat walls, mass plantings, native basalt outcroppings and shade trees.

The experience of the SBB team has benefited multiple medical centers across Idaho; a few examples include Saint Alphonsus Medical Center (Nampa), St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center (Ketchum), St. Luke’s Meridian Medical Center (Meridian) and St. Luke’s Eagle Medical Plaza (Eagle).
